Our first case study, with Rabbi Miriam Terlinchamp of Temple Sholom in Cincinnati, Ohio, emphasizes the importance of listening, narrow focus (one thing at a time), and the courage to experiment with new things. Under Rabbi Terlinchamp’s leadership, a dying synagogue sold its building to free up capital to invest in vision; they put half the money into a “lockbox” for seven years but made a plan to spend down the other half in five years, but not on a new building. Temple Sholom’s membership has been growing steadily ever since, and they have built an online community that is bigger than their in-person community.
